Cassie's mother, Kassiani, comes with great disbelief, at the urging of her mother (Cassie's grandmother) from Athens, for an evaluation with a speech therapist in Patras.
The speech therapist is me.
Cassie's difficulty is her hyperactivity and the fact that she does not speak. She is 5 years old, similar to my last daughter, Eleni.
Her mother speaks very fast. To my question of why you're coming to me before I can finish...
"First of all, I'm fine. We know full well, we all know, we've said it, that Cassie has a ceiling! Okay!
But everyone is talking about you and I said..."
He said to me like an orator, with intense determination.
I'm interrupting her! - I owed her one.
"TAVANI SHOULD BE OUT OF YOUR VOCABULARY!" I said.
Right.
Sharp.
Clearly.
And...firmly.
"It is one of my forbidden words and I say it to you with all the love and respect I have for you."
Correct.
Sharp.
Clearly.
When I asked her what words the little girl was saying, she said:
"Mom, Dad, Grandma."
Three.
I immediately begin the intervention in front of them( mom and grandma)after first giving them the proper instructions to train them.
In just a few minutes Cassie begins to verbally and signally say YES to me and even before I can ask. Since she was "grabbing" my question long before I asked it.
She also tells me
"SHUT UP!"
"COME!"
"STOP!"
"BAGELI!" When he wanted to call me.
"HELLO" when I finished the conference and left to say goodbye.
And I told Mom that she lied about her daughter only saying three words.
I lovingly and respectfully told her, as I always do.
She shook her head and took a deep breath.
I didn't need her verbal response anyway.
I said goodbye to them with all that entailed.
Grandma pushed hard on her stomach. Too deep.
Opening her mouth at the same time.
She takes her left hand with her right and from the wrist begins to raise it upwards as if stroking it.
"I can't believe it!" she says.
"I've got goose bumps, I've got goose bumps!" She looks up showing me the hairs on her arm.
"This conference I attended had a lot of tension, a lot of energy, in a good way. I wasn't expecting it. Thank you so much!"
"And that handshake..."
She continued.
I immortalized that handshake.
Your children, our children can do so much more than the whole world thinks!

Ο λογοθεραπευτής είμαι εγώ.
Η δυσκολία της Κάσυ είναι η υπερκινητικότητα και το ότι δε μιλάει. Είναι 5 ετών, όμοια με την τελευταία κόρη μου, Ελένη.
Η μητέρα της μιλάει πολύ γρήγορα. Στην ερώτησή μου γιατί έρχεστε σε εμένα, πριν καλά – καλά προλάβω να ολοκληρώσω…
«Καταρχάς είμαι εντάξει. Ξέρουμε καλά, όλοι ξέρουμε, το έχουμε πει, πως η Κάσυ έχει ταβάνι! Οκ!
Όμως όλοι μιλούν για εσάς και είπα…»
Μου είπε σαν ρήτορας, με έντονη αποφασιστικότητα.
Την διακόπτω!- Της το χρωστούσα άλλωστε.-
«ΤΟ ΤΑΒΑΝΙ ΘΑ ΠΡΕΠΕΙ ΝΑ ΒΓΕΙ ΑΠΟ ΤΟ ΛΕΞΙΛΟΓΙΟ ΣΑΣ!»Είπα.
Ορθά.
Κοφτά.
Ξεκάθαρα.
και…αυστηρά.
«Είναι μια από τις απαγορευμένες μου λέξεις και σας το λέω με όλη μου την αγάπη και το σεβασμό που έχω στο πρόσωπό σας.»
Ορθά.
Κοφτά.
Ξεκάθαρα.
Όταν τη ρώτησα ποιες λέξεις λέει η μικρή, μου είπε:
«Μαμά, μπαμπά, γιαγιά»
Τρεις.
Αρχίζω αμέσως την παρέμβαση μπροστά τους( στη μαμά και στη γιαγιά)αφού έδωσα πρώτα τις κατάλληλες οδηγίες για την εκπαίδευσή τους.
Σε μερικά μόλις λεπτά η Κάσυ αρχίζει να μου λέει λεκτικά και νοηματικά ΝΑΙ και μάλιστα πριν προλάβω να ρωτήσω. Αφού εκείνη «άρπαζε» την ερώτησή μου πολύ πριν την κάνω.
Επίσης μου λέει
«ΣΗΚΩ!»
«ΕΛΑ!»
«ΣΤΑΜΑΤΑ!»
«ΒΑΓΓΕΛΗ!» Όταν ήθελε να με φωνάξει.
«ΓΕΙΑ» όταν τελείωσα τη συνέδρια και έφυγα για να με χαιρετήσει.
Κι εγώ είπα στη μαμά πως είπε ψέματα ότι η κόρη της λέει μόνο τρεις λέξεις.
Με αγάπη και σεβασμό της το είπα, όπως πάντα.
Εκείνη κούνησε το κεφάλι της και πήρε μια βαθιά ανάσα.
Δε χρειαζόμουν έτσι κι αλλιώς τη λεκτική απάντησή της.
Τους αποχαιρέτησα με όλα τα συναφή.
Η γιαγια σπρώχνει με δύναμη το στομάχι της. Πολύ βαθιά.
Ανοίγοντας μαζί το στόμα της.
Πιάνει το αριστερό της χέρι με το δεξί και από τον καρπό αρχίζει να το ανεβάζει προς τα πάνω σαν να το χαϊδεύει.
«Δεν μπορώ να το πιστέψω!»λέει.
«Έχω ανατριχιάσει, έχω ανατριχιάσει!» Κοιτάζει δείχνοντάς μου τις τρίχες του χεριού της.
«Αυτή η συνέδρια που παρακολούθησα είχε πολλή ένταση, πολλή ενέργεια, με την καλή έννοια. Δεν τον περίμενα. Σας ευχαριστώ πολύ!»
«Και αυτή η χειραψία…»
Συνέχισε.
Εγώ απαθανάτισα αυτή τη χειραψία.
Τα παιδιά σας, τα παιδιά μας μπορούν να κάνουν πολύ περισσότερα από όσα όλος ο κόσμος νομίζει!
Και φυσικά…
Να μιλήσουν!
