Today was the fifth and last conference of twelve-year-old Peter, who came from far away.
He was introduced to me non-verbally.
"Do you have anything to ask before I close the conference?"
I asked the mother who was attending and she told me to do what I thought was right .She was covered by the training.
I decided to ask him if he liked the sea he went to today.
I waited, waited, waited.
"I liked it." He answered.
"I didn't think he'd answer!" my mother said.
"I wouldn't give him that much time." she concluded.
It's the brainwashing you parents get from the experts that your children don't talk.
And eventually they stop.
The difference my trial with the mother, at that point, is that I don't believe in non-verbal autism.
It's just that I know there is no such thing as non-verbal autism!
It's just that I know Peter will answer me.
And every Peter...
It's that I take my time.
And Peter...
he answered me.
…
He liked the sea.
I like it too.
